This is a dupe of http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23705 and
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=563642
Setting dpi to 96 by default regardless of the connected monitors'
dimensions was an upstream decision.
