Have you tested this? I've just tested it and it doesn't work for me. The ad-hoc network is not shown on the neighbourhood view of the XO-1. It is, however, shown on the output of "iwlist eth0 scan" on the XO-1, so it is as if Sugar 0.82 is filtering it. Test configuration: two XO-1.5 build os123, one XO-1 build 802. Test method: boot each, "Create new wireless network" on an XO-1.5, monitor other XOs neighbourhood view.
