Some retail cards don't work really well with OpenFirmware ... the symptom is command timeouts on first or second access when used in external slot in an adaptor.
This can be tested for:
ok dir ext:\
or
ok dir ext:\directory\
The end result is that OpenFirmware won't boot from them.
