The standard solution to that is called "package managers" - rpm in your case. Unfortunately its network version, yum, is really heavyweight and too clumsy to run in many XOs. Installing updates with rpm, and fixing or rewriting yum to be low impact in XOs would be much better for the community than continuing to evolve your own sui generis tool. Though it's much more fun to reinvent the wheel, the subsequent maintenance load is substantial, as you're noticing.
