No, the OpenFirmware test output is not logged in the field. It can be captured by a serial adapter.
The olpc-runin-tests are available for XO-1.5 and later, and with version 0.11.3 can be run in a five minute mode (touch /runin/quick), but the test is designed to stress the system and would cost much power and degrade performance if it were used in background.
