when I tried to boot back up into Sugar, I got a blank screen.

The culprit is olpc-kbdshim.i686 0:18-1.fc14.

When you did 'yum -y update', it got picked up.
You should have done 'yum -y update --exclude=olpc-kbdshim'


One bypass might be to download olpc-kbdshim.i686 0:17-1.fc14, then at the blank screen get into a text console (ctl-alt-F2) and issue
'rpm --force -Uvh olpc-kbdshim.i686 0:17-1.fc14'
