Another thing that Michael suggested: connect VREF to a FTDI input through a 10K resistor (for protection) so that we can check for the device power. A buffer may not be necessary if 2.5V is above the threshold of the FTDI (check the datasheet). Similarly, the device->host buffer might also be removed for the same reason.
