I wrote a little script to query BOOTSTS over JTAG:

Hi Werner
how did you know read BOOTSTS is 'pld readreg 0x20', I mean the '0x20'
(a lot of things need learn)
Findings:
1) after a successful configuration, no matter whether I loaded
the "standby" bitstram or the "soc" bitstream, BOOTSTS was
0x0001.
2) if I changed the standby bitstream in NOR such that it had a
CRC error and the M1 thus didn't boot, BOOTSTS was 0.
...
1) and 2) mean that I can use BOOTSTS for my NOR corruption
experiments to test whether corruption has occurred. I'm putting
this to use in a new script that also automates forensics and
recovery.
cool.
