I would much prefer on-board regulation for all needed voltages too but I'm happy to hear that mixing up your wallwarts is safe. Two years ago when I did the same with the ML401 board (connecting 12V instead of 5V that is) it fried the audio codec, 3 dc/dc regulators and the usb power control switch.
