I've once seen some suprisingly simple code for USB storage.
Not sure how well it would perform in the real world, though,
and what its limitations are (e.g., it was probably read-only).

So USB storage may be a possibility with the current
architecture, but I'd locate it in that grey area between
"dirty but fun hack" and "you'd rather spend all that time
solving the real issue."

Linux 3.x has a nice USB stack, many Wi-Fi drivers, and ever
improving real-time features. And let's not forget an army:
of people who maintain all that stuff. Here is your future :-)
