To me this looks like we should first try without any dedicated
protection, until we have a strong reason to add one, such as
following what other well designed high-volume consumer
electronics are doing about dcc5v?

Our first priority should be that if dcc5v sees overcurrent
or short, m1 will not experience *permanent* damage. If that is
achieved, all else looks very marginal to me. And it seems we
have achieved that goal already.
