I was thinking about this exact same question later / after I sent that email.

I think that this higher-level abstraction CLI should *assume* shared memory 
and process loopback.  I.e., specifying sm or vader and self should not be 
required.  The intent is to serve the user who just wants to ensure that "my 
<INSERT_FAVORITE_NETWORK> network is used for MPI communications" -- and by 
that, users typically mean that it's used for off-server MPI communications.
