I can only speak for what, _I would like_. :) Software should receive a lot more recognition within scientific communities. And as citations are a standard way to express content and usage of other works I do believe that DOI's would be helpful.
For the majority of communities the exact version of the used software is irrelevant while other communities _may_ find individual citations useful. I would certainly welcome a generic DOI for any application/library. Anyhow, one DOI to mark the entire application is by far the most important thing. Possibly stepping this when supporting major standards, for instance MPI-1, MPI-2, MPI-3? And, finally if you like individual release DOI could also be helpful. 2016-01-11 15:59 GMT+01:00 Jeff Squyres (jsquyres) <[email protected]>: > Researchers / academics: I have a question for you. > > Would it be useful for Open MPI to publish Digital Object Identifier (DOI) > or Research Resource Identifier (RRI) to identify releases? > > Per articles like > http://www.nature.com/news/the-unsung-heroes-of-scientific-software-1.19100, > would it be helpful to publish a DOI / RRI for each Open MPI release? > And/or nightly snapshot tarballs (e.g., if a paper used some results from a > specific nightly tarball, or somesuch)?
