Hello everyone,

In our developers meeting yesterday we had a discussion around the 6.0 release
of Open MPI, and I wanted to briefly summarize the issues at hand and the
current plans.

  * We set a tentative branching date of Oct 24. We know of one or two items
that still need to get into the 6.0 branch, but we decided not to further
postpone the branching in order to be able to start with some of the other
aspects of the release work (e.g. setting up nightly testing, CI, etc. for the
new branch). If you have an update still pending for main branch that you think
should be in the 6.0 release, please make an effort to have it merged before
that day. This will allow us also to present relatively robust plans for the
6.0 release series at SC.

  * There is one component for which we have an outstanding technical item
that needs resolution one way or another, namely coll/hcoll. This component has
not been 'embiggened' and would therefore not be operational in the 6.0 branch
based on our understanding. We would need a statement from the component owner
(NVIDIA) on how to handle it (the three options probably being either to fix
it, disable compilation by default, or complete removal from the 6.0 release
series).

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
Howard & Edgar
