Interesting experiment.  I've never tried.  I just checked the
function in mac80211 that converts 802.11 to 802.3 frames, and it
doesn't look like there are any checks for the 802.1Q vlan field.  If
that was the case, this would be a mac80211 limitation.  Do you have a
sniffer or tcpdump capture of vlan frames?  That would be relatively
easy to spot.
