Right that we have confirmed that it is bind running as the named
server, we have to ask why samba etc doesn't seem to know this ?

After you install bind9, you have to change some of the named conf
files to make named aware of samba (and visa versa), hopefully the
wiki page I referenced, should help you set up your bind files correctly.
