i am simply using Werner's scripts that generate /root for initramfs image, nothing too sophisticated on my side. i am not sure how to measure udev performance - for me, mdev takes no extra space. udev takes much longer to start (in this particular case). Werner's stuff is here: http://svn.openmoko.org/developers/werner/smallsys/ You can test my image from here: http://vanous.penguin.cz/files/om/menu/ just flash a kernel, that's it. you can also see there my kernel .config etc...
