navit with german speech?

Hi,
I tried to turn navit's speech output into german, following these 
instructions:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Navit#Speech

But it doesn't work (LC_MESSAGES=de, LANGUAGE=de...)

Setting
<speech type="cmdline" data="espeak -v de '%s' &amp;"/>

in /usr/share/navit/speech.xml at least produces german spoken numbers and 
street names, but the instructions sound very funny then...
