This message is just an early heads up on the next kernel release. Linus has decided to start the 3.0 kernel series.
I've been testing an 3.0.0-rc2 kernel, and I'm finding some kernel drivers (nvidia in my case) that assume there are only 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. We may run into other drivers or packages with similar issues. It's kind-of similar to a mini-y2k issue. There's going to be a few packages that just never anticipated a 3.0.x kernel. If possible, the next kernel release would be a good one to wait for 3.0.1, to let driver issues settle out. A possible alternative would be to rename the kernel to 2.6.40 by editing the Makefile. Who knows, maybe the issue will go away by the time 3.0.0 is released. But we should keep our eye out for issues.
