My two cents: when booting from USB KDE is sometimes picky. I had to
pick that option to install sometimes, especially on old systems (AMD
4200+, 2GB RAM). Once on disk, everything went smooth. It's not bad to
have it, IMHO.

I've tried with latest daily Minimal, it works as expected.
