Good news, Bad news.

I solved my issue with X resolution. Apparently the X session is
sensitive to the command line used to boot the system. After adding
back 'vga=791' (which always scolds me about deprecation), the
resolution is normal for this system.

But, after starting about 10 live sessions without any issues, I
finally encountered the caja Window-bomb, with my screen filling up
with about 8 caja file manager instances as soon as the X session
started.

I have no idea why this issue would be so intermittent. I've yet to
run into this issue on an installed system, but with it being this
intermittent, I don't know if that means anything.
