That way a stratum one can stop using its local refclock if/when it goes wacko, and still provide good time. Like when a bird sits on your GPS antenna. And single time source may work, but it bypasses the grouping and selection algorithms. You want to see them work too. And, as always, chronyd takes a different tack.
