So, I tried this in my ntp.conf:

server pi3.rellim.com nts -4 nts maxpoll 5 ca /tmp  # pi3

No certs in my /tmp.

My server still connected to pi3.rellim.com:

pi3.rellim.com  .PPS.            1 8    2   64    3   0.5473  -0.0559  10.4857

Up to date source:

# ntpd -V
ntpd ntpsec-1.1.3+ 2019-04-02T18:27:16Z (git rev 666fa4784)
kong /usr/local/src/NTP/ntpsec # git pull

X11 forwarding request failed
Already up to date.
