It should work without DCB, but you may run into pause check issues.
I don't think I've tried it, either.
The old target code checked that link pause was enabled in both directions.
That check should be easy to defeat though. If the virtual e1000
supports it, you may be able to just turn on pause with ethtool.
Otherwise you may have to make minor code changes.
