Hi Robert, Thanks for the prompt reply. I did try the 'make' ... and when that failed at the patching step, I attempted the manual patch and showed that in my question.
After having typed a long reply to your question, however, I just realized what the problem was -- the 'Code/CVS' link on hbaapi sourceforge takes you to download hbaapi.tar.gz which is ALSO source code, just not the correct one! To download the correct hbaapi_src_2.2.tar.gz, you have to go to the Files link and then choose hbaapi_src! While working through the steps, I just assumed that hbaapi_src_2.2.tar.gz mentioned in the INSTALL instructions must have been renamed to be hbaapi.tar.gz recently. Duh! Thank you for the answer anyway!
