Callum, If you are seeing the error when opening the console from VM Portal (web-ui), this sounds a lot like issue [1]. A patch against the ovirt REST api was done to help mitigate some errors that should not happen. I'll take a look to see how it is working in the current master snapshot of ovirt-engine and VM Portal.
What version of oVirt are you using?
