I suppose basic auth is broken in regards to LDAP. There have been quite
a few issues with basic auth in the past few months, can you file a a
bug on github and cc @LukasReschke and @Blizzz?

Actually, I've run into a snag that I can't seem to get around. I'm
using the LDAP plugin as my users are all part of a domain. When I try
to use the REST API method described in the links below,
authentication does not work for any of the LDAP users. I get a "Login
failed" warning reported from core in the error log for any LDAP user.
The regular admin account (my only non-LDAP user) seems to work just
fine. Any idea what would be causing this?
Thanks.

Pefect, this is exactly the second path I started down since sending
my communication. Glad to know I switched to the better method.
Thanks again.

The link to the 6 dev docs have been removed because they are mostly
wrong. They are basically identical with the 5 docs so you can look
it up there. As for the external API: For your usecase it is better
to just implement a very simple RESTful API like described here
