In the meantime, I've discussed with Danimo on IRC. As to binary compatibility: that's not needed yet, as there are no users of the new library. I'd actually forego it for now, as to gauge the feasibility of the split. I want this to be done in steps, first define the functional dividing lines (first stab at that is the current branch), then refine that, and perhaps a couple of releases later commit to BC.
