What happens is that the image is switched onto the external CRT. I'm not sure if it is a bios bug from HP or something else, but I've seen the same problem myself (on an OmniBook xe4500). If you set up the bios to autoselect display, instead of using the default of "both" it will always end up on the external monitor.
