Hi,

We have a problem with a bunch of legacy IDL applications. At present we
run these applications on AIX servers with Xterminals as the display
devices, these Xterminals all run 8 bit colour., and the IDL
applications are perfectly happy.
This hardware is ageing and we want to roll out ~150 Linux PCs running
XFree86 as replacements.

Now the problem: it seems that our proposed Linux/Xfree86 platform
reports only 24bit visuals. IDL (version 5.1), seems to be a a bit brain
dead and when it fails to find a report of 8bit visuals, either fails to
run or perhaps displays data in black on black windows.

I see that there is some discussion of this on the RSI sight and they
discuss the obvious solution of degrading the colour depth to 8bit on
our work stations, however this is unacceptable as we want to run more
recent visualisation tools etc. in short we don't want to cripple our
graphics performance for the sake of a bunch of legacy applications.

So, if XFree86 were to report 24bit as well as (at least) 8bit visuals I
think our problems would be solved.

What do you think - am I on the right track, has anybody done this
already, or is there a patch ....?

TIA
   Graeme Howlett.
