(B> Hold on... I'm seeing a crash with the Caslon fonts. Are you seeing
(B> something else?
(B
(BOn my machine there is no crash neither with the Caslon fonts nor with
(Bthe Omegaserif fonts, only an error message when trying to open the
(Bfont:
(B
(BFor example:
(B
(B mfabian@magellan:~$ xlsfonts -fn "-*-omegaserif88591-medium-r-*"
(B -altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ascii-0
(B -altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso10646-1
(B -altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
(B mfabian@magellan:~$
(B
(Bi.e. xlsfonts lists 3 fonts for this pattern. The XLFD with
(B"ascii-0" and "iso8859-1" encoding can be displayed OK:
(B
(B mfabian@magellan:~$ xlsfonts -l -fn
(B-altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ascii-0
(B DIR MIN MAX EXIST DFLT PROP ASC DESC NAME
(B    -->    0  255  some    0   34  15    4
(B-altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ascii-0
(B mfabian@magellan:~$ xlsfonts -l -fn
(B-altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
(B DIR MIN MAX EXIST DFLT PROP ASC DESC NAME
(B    -->    0  255  some    0   34  15    4
(B-altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
(B mfabian@magellan:~$
(B
(B"xfd -fn" gives an error message as well:
(B
(B mfabian@magellan:~$ xfd -fn
(B-altsys-omegaserif88591-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso1
(B 0646-1

(B
(BOn Egbert Eich's machine, the same commands crashed the X-server
(Bthough. I'm using an x86_64 platform, Egbert uses i386.
(B
(BI have tons of other (unfortunately commercial) TrueType fonts though,
(Bwhich crash my X server as well.
(B
(BThe only free fonts I have which cause problems with the freetype
(Bmodule are the Omegaserif, the Caslon, and watanabe-mincho.ttf and
(Bwadalab-gothic.ttf. watanabe-mincho.ttf and wadalab-gothic.ttf are
(Brather old, free Japanese TrueType fonts which have only a SJIS Cmap,
(Bno Unicode cmap. They worked on XFree86 4.2.1 with the freetype1 based
(Bfreetype module though.
(B
(BI didn't yet report the Problem with watanabe-mincho.ttf and
(Bwadalab-gothic.ttf because it might be something completely unrelated
(Bto the problem with the Omegaserif and the Caslon fonts. The
(BOmegaserif and the Caslon fonts have a Microsoft Unicode cmap as far
(Bas I can tell (ftdump from ft2demos-2.1.3 says so).
