why? there is an OS specific bug in linker where it automatically add -L /usr/lib in the link path, BEFORE any of your -L path options... this has been reported and hope they will fix it in the next release. now back again to the question for the expat/xml experts, any problems commenting out XML_SetDoctypeDeclHandler? this function is apparently not in the early versions of expat. While porting other xml tools with GNU configure, I've seen things like checking for XML_SetDoctypeDeclHandler()... no and the code deals with the case by ifdef out that function. Before I have an answer, I will just disable the OS version of expat and force to link with xfree86 version. Thanks!
