Hi, In the interests of portability--their base system doesn't ship with perl--the NetBSD people have implemented ucs2any.pl in C. There's a version at
http://backyard.homeunix.net:8080/~ben/ucs2any/ It's worth considering including this in the XFree86 tree, if the server-side re-encoding is a long way from being complete.
