I've looked into this.
There seems to be no way to to make it safe using the 
functions that are available to drivers. Required 
functions are not exported and probably shouldn't be.

I have therefore disabled the write back of mode data to
the application. 
The problem affects only Xservers which use Matrox's HAL library.
There are only very few cases where this library is still needed.
