Yes, there was, but the least atrophied solution to that issue at the moment is probably the Enlightenment Sound Daemon. You'd need to set ESPEAKER in your environment to get clients to talk to a remote [to them, local to you] server. -- "These are the prettiest looking witnesses we have had in a long time.
