Does anyone know if fast z-buffer clears and 'z-compression aka hyper-z' are going to be implemented in radeon DRI drivers (actually it is in the 'radeon' kernel module). It seems to be one of the areas where major performance gain could be achieved, taking this driver to the same performance level as ATI's binary only driver has. I've done some perf. tests and by disabling z-clears frame rates almost double, which shows that the current approach by drawing a dummy quad is very slow ... I would be willing to implement it myself if anyone would tell me where to find information about programming this feature.
ATI has not provided documentation for this feature to developers. Until then, it has zero chance of being implemented in open-source drivers.
