Yes, the XFree86 server already picks the best builtin (usually VESA) mode matching the requested resolution and monitor parameters. There are some nice improvements that can be made, like better use of DDC info (especially for flat panels), and using GTF to allow easy selection of custom resolutions and refresh rates (both of which I'm working on). It picks the "best" resolution too (for some definition of "best).
