I experience the same problem as many others with my i855 based Asus M3N laptop. The SXGA+ 1400x1050 natural lcd resolution cannot be set because the mode is not available in the BIOS. There are also difficulties switching between lcd, lcd+crt, and crt on the fly.
The second situation is described in this thread: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xfree86&w=2&r=1&s=external+crt+i855&q=b The first problem with SXGA+ has been discussed a lot with the conclusion that nothing can be done without more information from Intel. I just wanted to ask what can be made of the register information from this datasheet. http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/datashts/25261503.pdf On pages 119-120 there is information about setting the resolution. Would it be possible to disassemble a bios routine and compare it to the datasheet to determine how to program the mode? How hard is this? Any tips for how to try doing this on my Linux system? Finally, I wonder if maybe Intel would share more information now. I read a recent article about a push for better support of the Centrino wireless chip with a binary driver and later an open source driver likely to be released. A representative at the LinuxWorld Expo in NY gave me an email contact to make a request for better support of i855 graphics. I didn't ask yet because I personally don't have a good understanding what exactly is needed or what to do with what they might release. Anyone have a good suggestion how to approach them? Thanks -L.
