For the record, some notes below:

Uncompress gives the same results as gunzip as far as what the files look like 
in kghostview (I see the first two letters of the file).

That did it (or at least helped)--after doing that I can view the files.  A 
remaining problem is that the fonts are small, when I enlarge them to read 
them, the lines are too wide for my screen (they don't wrap).

So I'm going to read the O'Reilly stuff you suggested.  (One of the books (6A) 
is in HTML and is very comfortable to read online, so I'll start there.
