Salaam, everyone,
I recently proposed a font selection "widget" which will classify
fonts into script categories. For example, Arabic fonts would be
automagically classified into an "Arabic" category, Chinese fonts
into a "Chinese" category, and so on, thus providing a degree of
sane organization to font collections on Open Source platforms.
The intent is that this widget should be
used in Open Source desktop software such as Gnome and KDE.
Please see the proposal here:
Hi,
Looks like a good project. I haven't time to look at the details, but
have one suggestion based on your email. That is to use RDF, not XML.
Or rather, RDF/XML. It's specifically designed to encode this kind of
"semantic web" metadata. Ideally, each font (each piece of SW, for that
matter) would be described by RDF metadata (whether internal or external
to the font file itself). E.g., the metadata could describe the Unicode
block coverage of the font, and optionally the languages supported by
the blocks.
