i don't think, maintaining them is quite as work-intensive as it seams.
The main code won't change for a long time now. If we work hand-in-hand,
i.e. pinging each other when some bug is removed from one of the codes,
then i think it should be possible to maintain more than one native code.
Furthermore the command dl() in php is disabled in safemode. Some hosts
refuse to deactivate safemode, thus loading the library won't be possible.

As for the ever-green idea of writing a wrapper: i tried it myself, but
didn't succeed. Of course this doesn't mean it isn't possible, but i
guess it is easier to simply translate the whole thing, especially since
i propose a different structure. Plus, i suspect, not every
hosting-service provides the ability to include foreign libraries which
would narrow down the possibilities for use of this library.
The problem is that rewriting it leads to 2 separate code trees and we and both
should
be maintained.
I can start/help writing a php extension for it if you all think it'll be
useful.
