Are you familiar with Aspell's Amharic dictionary ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/am/aspell6-am-0.03-1.tar.bz2 ? Isn't it good enough ? (I am clueless about Amharic). If not, I can describe how we've built a spell checker for Hebrew, which is also similar to Arabic.
