Hey all,

Compressed send/recv has just landed on OpenZFS / illumos. If you are using
compressed ARC, you can now use the -c or --compressed options to zfs send,
and it will create a send stream which uses compressed filesystem contents
as is. This should increase your logical throughput by approximately the
compressratio of the filesystems you're sending with no additional CPU
overhead on the sending or receiving systems. (You should also use the -L
and -e options to enable large / embedded block sending optimizations for
optimal sending performance.)

For more information, see my talk at the developer summit last year (
https://youtu.be/LaNgoAZeTww?t=19m50s), check out zfs(1m), or feel free to
email me.

Thanks!
Dan Kimmel
