I'm opening this to try and re-integrate this patch after it having been
reverted. This time, the patch should apply cleanly (and build) to the
master branch, as it contains the fix proposed by Toomas Soome here:

I've also double checked that proposed fix, and it matches the code that
we've been using on Delphix OS, so I'm confident that's the correct way
to address the previous regression.
