I'm assuming that the crash can be reproduced with and without the diff proposed here, right? so I'd argue the crash isn't introduced by this change, and that makes it OK to land as-is (especially since it does prevent _some_ kernel panics, even if it doesn't cover them all). but I'm OK holding off until we have something better too; I'll wait to open the RTI.
