Given that Sun published a bash binary with a correctly working "echo", I would guess that it is always possible to make it PPSIX compliant. The Linux people miss-interpret POSIX with their "echo" behavior. POSIX requires the backslash escapes to work on a certified UNIX unless it is inly certified as an embedded OS.
