As I think was mentioned elsewhere, we'll ideally want to add a new send stream flag for new compression functions, so that we can reject the send stream up front, rather than hitting a "invalid" record (or blowing up on older software). i.e. we shouldn't intentionally rely on the checks you're adding, but I agree they're a good idea as a safety check.
