is a great resource...but is owned by one of the big us tv companies
and completely closed off.

Yes it's available from within the API.
I don't think they have a 'per-season' synopsis. TVRage.com has some
kind of data like this, TV.com seems to be the most complete source
but,
of course, they don't have any API nor do I think they give permission
to use the data gathered... A user contributed plugin, anyone?
