There's a significant distinction between advising the government of the day 
(regardless of which party is in power) and advising a political party.

I really don't follow this at all. Tom has spent (and does spend)
quite a lot of his time talking to the present government, indeed
working with it quite closely, how is this any different? If the No 10
petitions site didn't compromise My Society, then why should this?

Well, maybe this explains why I am not a politician.
