For sites under a Google domain they geocode postcodes accurately, almost
certainly having paid the correct licence fee to Royal Mail to do so and
using reasonably up-to-date data.

For sites using the Google Maps API on any other domain they only geocode
the first parts of the postcode. They did, for a while, geocode the full
postcode accurately, but had to withdraw this feature due to licensing
issues: presumably their licence with Royal Mail only cover their own web
sites. The API geocoding is also using older postcode data, as for a while
the code changes around Cambridge weren't included even though they were
on the Google sites. The API also has bugs in the postcode parser, so you
sometimes end up with the wrong postcode being geocoded by Google.
